German Chancellor's Fashion Faux Pas

Fashion Critic Derek Guy Weighs in on German Politicians’ Wardrobes

In a recent interview with the Zeitmagazin, renowned fashion critic Derek Guy shared his thoughts on the sartorial choices of Germany’s top politicians. The first to receive his critique was SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who Guy deemed unsuitable for his formal attire. “As the Chancellor of the largest economy in Europe, you’re not exactly known for your laid-back style. Wear a tie” Guy advised.

Guy was less than impressed with the fit of Scholz’s suits, stating that even a tailor would not approve of the low-rise, tight-fitting trousers. In contrast, Green Party Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck received mixed feedback for his T-shirt and suit combinations. While Guy acknowledged that the suits were cut more loosely, he questioned whether Habeck’s style was suitable for a high-ranking official, likening it to a radio DJ’s attire.

On the other hand, CDU/CSU Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz received praise from Guy, who commended the fit of his suits. “Merz won’t make the cover of GQ, but in my opinion, most politicians should dress like him” Guy said. He specifically praised the cut of Merz’s suits, noting that the reverses were slightly wider and the trousers hung well, with a higher cut.
