Automated Driving Technology Draws Interest from German Automakers and Defense Contractors
German automotive manufacturers are reportedly exploring potential collaboration opportunities with defense contractors in the field of automated driving, according to a report by the German business newspaper Handelsblatt. The report cites insiders from the defense and automotive industries.
A high-ranking manager of a major German defense conglomerate confirmed to the publication that initial talks have taken place regarding a possible technology transfer. The focus is on how the development departments of car manufacturers can enable unmanned systems for logistical or supporting purposes in the military sector. Discussions have been held with all major German car manufacturers.
Multiple Volkswagen managers, as quoted by Handelsblatt, acknowledged the transferability of civilian automation technology to military applications. However, the development of weapons, ammunition, or the construction of offensive battle tanks is not considered within the company’s scope. A Volkswagen spokesperson declined to comment on the talks, stating that the company primarily produces for the civilian market and that dual-use goods, while playing a subordinate role, are only exported in compliance with all export regulations.
Autonomous systems are increasingly playing a crucial role in modern warfare. Both Russia and Ukraine are using, among other things, semi-autonomous drones in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
