German Aristocrat Slams Scholz and Merz's Lack of Etiquette

After the TV duel, the chairman of the German Knigge Society, Clemens Graf von Hoyos, sees room for improvement in etiquette and behavior for both Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Union’s Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU). “There is still potential for improvement in terms of courtesy and mannerisms for both candidates” said von Hoyos to the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday edition).

Neither of the two candidates has made a bad impression. Scholz’s accusations that Merz is “dumb” or his positions are laughable, certainly weigh heavier than the numerous jabs Merz took at Scholz, he said.

On the other hand, the Chancellor scored points in terms of courtesy through his engaged body language and attentive listening. “Merz only showed Scholz the cold shoulder and whenever he turned to Scholz, he spoke to Maybrit Illner and Sandra Maischberger instead” said the etiquette expert. “Eye contact and general approachability – more a non-starter.”

Overall, von Hoyos considers it a good evening for the debate culture. “That is the decisive factor” he said.
