Transnistria Faces Energy Crisis

Transnistria’s leader, Wadim Krasnoselski, has warned of an imminent energy crisis, citing the region’s reliance on gas and the potential for a complete breakdown of the energy system if gas supplies are disrupted.

The region’s gas reserves are running low and Krasnoselski estimates that the coal reserves will last only until mid-February. He has accused Moldova of hindering the gas transit to Transnistria and has blamed the energy crisis on the lack of cooperation from the neighboring country.

Krasnoselski has called for immediate action to resolve the crisis, saying that any delays would only make the situation worse. He has also warned that a complete breakdown of the energy system would take two to three months to recover from.

In the meantime, thousands of Transnistrians have taken to the streets, protesting the lack of heat and electricity in the region. The crisis has been exacerbated by Moldova’s refusal to pay its debts to Gazprom and the subsequent halt of gas supplies from Ukraine.
