G7 Summit: No Breakthrough in US-German Trade Dispute, But a Strong Message for Ukraine

German Finance Minister Holds Constructive Talks with US Counterpart, No Breakthrough on Trade Dispute

At the G7 summit in Canada, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil expressed a cautious optimism after his first talks with the US Finance Minister. While the discussions were described as “constructive and open”, no agreement was reached on the trade dispute, Klingbeil told the ZDF’s “Heute-Journal”.

The minister also highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the US support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of the G7’s continued solidarity with the war-torn country. “The G7 remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine” he said, adding that the assistance remains “unbroken”.

In a separate remark, Klingbeil addressed the pressing issue of Germany’s budget, stating that “we must cut back on spending.” The government has set its sights on the country’s economic strength, focusing on growth and competition. This approach, Klingbeil argued, sends a signal to international leaders that Germany is once again a significant player on the global stage.
