G7 Leaders Must Act Now to Prevent Global War Escalation in Middle East

Diplomats Warn of Catastrophic Consequences

In the wake of the recent Israeli military attacks on Iranian targets, a chorus of international voices has emerged, urging an immediate de-escalation of the situation. Linken-Chef Jan van Aken, a prominent German politician, has strongly criticized the Israeli strikes, labeling them a “dangerous escalation” and a “grave violation of international law.”

Van Aken called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to condemn the attack and for all parties to refrain from further aggression, in order to protect the civilian populations of Iran and Israel. He also highlighted the need for a diplomatic solution, citing the 2015 nuclear deal as a successful example of how military tensions can be alleviated through negotiations.

The German politician’s remarks were echoed by Siemtje Möller, a senior member of the Social Democratic Party, who urged Germany and the European Union to take an active role in calming the situation. “Both sides must exercise extreme restraint” she emphasized, warning that any further escalation would pose “unkalculable risks for the region and beyond.”

Möller also stressed the importance of diplomacy in preventing the development of nuclear weapons in Iran and ensuring the long-term security of Israel. “Germany and Europe must not only be observers, but take an active responsibility and work together with our European partners and the US to initiate new diplomatic initiatives” she said.

Meanwhile, Wolfgang Ischinger, a former German ambassador to the US and the UK, viewed the upcoming G7 summit as a crucial opportunity to prevent a global escalation of the conflict. “I don’t want to create panic, but this is the most dangerous situation I have seen in the last 30 years, with so many acute hotspots simultaneously” he warned.

Ischinger emphasized the need for a coordinated effort among several major powers, including the US, European nations and China, to define a de-escalation line and bring all parties on board, including Russia. “Russia needs the Iran for its drones and it’s not in their interest to see the Iran constantly bombed by Israel” he noted. “So, it would be desirable to try to bring all the players, including Russia, China, the Saudi leadership, Turkey, the US and the G7, on a de-escalation line.
