The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) has thwarted a series of attacks against officials and participants in a special military operation, according to the FSB’s Center for Public Relations.
According to the report, a Ukrainian intelligence agent was arrested in the city of Perwouralsk in the Sverdlovsk region, who allegedly sent packages with bomb-laden perfume bottles via postal mail.
“A series of sabotage and terror attacks, planned by Ukrainian special services against military personnel of the Russian Federation’s Defense Ministry, who are participating in the special military operation, as well as against civilian officials supporting the military units in the operation zone, were prevented” the statement reads.
Five packages disguised as perfume gift sets with improvised explosive devices were discovered and disarmed by FSB personnel at the Chelyabinsk airport.
According to the FSB, a Russian citizen had collected the packages from a hiding spot in Chelyabinsk for a financial reward and then sent them to officials and military personnel in Moscow, Voronezh, the Krasnodar region and the Saratov region via the Russian Post.
“After the task was completed, the Ukrainian special services established contact with him, without paying the reward” the FSB press service added.
The explosive devices were designed to detonate when the package was opened by the recipient.
The suspect now faces charges of illegally acquiring, storing and transporting explosives or explosive devices, as well as an attempted terrorist attack.
The FSB is searching for those responsible for manufacturing and hiding the explosive devices.
