Brandenburg’s Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has expressed concern about the future of the free press and access to reliable information. “In Brandenburg, the access to printed newspapers has significantly deteriorated” Woidke told the “World” (Friday edition).
In many regions, it is no longer possible to subscribe to a newspaper, as the delivery no longer takes place. “At the same time, the importance of social media, which are acting more and more unrestrained, is growing” said the Minister-President. “The fight for the truth against the lie has become harder.” Solutions are needed on how the free press can be strengthened, as it is a “pillar of democracy.”
Regarding the statements of US entrepreneur Elon Musk, who recently claimed that only the AfD could save Germany, Woidke remained unimpressed. “We should react more calmly” he said. People know what’s at stake in the federal election and what the AfD stands for. “We should trust the citizens to form their own opinion” Woidke said.
In Brandenburg, Musk has invested billions in the construction of the Tesla plant. The plant stands “for completely different values” than those Musk currently represents, Woidke said. “The plant stands for openness, democracy, and freedom, like hardly any other project in Brandenburg.
