FRAUD SHOPPING: The Dark Side of E-Commerce Exposed!

Berlin, Germany – Consumer Protection Ministers from the German states gathered in the capital city to address pressing issues, adopting 26 resolutions to tackle current challenges. One of the central topics was the protection against fraudulent online offers, known as fake shops, which cause millions of dollars in damage annually. According to recent surveys, already 24 percent of German consumers have fallen victim to online fraud.

The conference emphasized the need for search engines, comparison portals and marketplaces to take greater responsibility, as they often direct consumers to fraudulent offers. Furthermore, the possibility of state authorities shutting down fake shop websites is to be examined. Another key focus was on combating food waste, with the aim of removing legal hurdles to enable donations and reducing the staggering amount of wasted food.

Berlin’s Justice Senator, Felor Badenberg, underscored the significance of consumer protection as a vital aspect of daily life. Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig announced plans to improve tenant protection and better shield consumers from financial overload. The next conference is slated to take place in Brandenburg in 2026.
