German Trade Union IG Metall to Focus on Other Demands, No Immediate Support for Four-Day Workweek
In a recent interview, Christiane Benner, the chair of the German trade union IG Metall, clarified the organization’s stance on the four-day workweek. According to Benner, the union will not actively push for the introduction of a four-day workweek with full pay compensation at this time. This decision does not mean, however, that the idea is no longer considered a viable solution.
Benner emphasized that the union is currently aware of the strained economic situation in many companies, with employers shortening working hours at the expense of employees. In response, the union is calling on the new German government to invest in the country’s economic location and provide relief to employees.
Benner emphasized the need for swift investments from the government, relief for citizens and commitment from companies to maintain their presence in Germany. The key to achieving this, she said, should be at the center of the debate.
