Former Constitutional Court Chief Warns of Germany's Potential Crisis Over Failed Chancellor Vote

Former Federal Constitutional Court President Hans-Jürgen Papier expressed concern over the Kanzlerwahl-Debakel of Friedrich Merz (CDU). “That a chancellor fails in the first round has never happened before” Papier told the “Handelsblatt” (Wednesday edition). The Basic Law makes clear provisions for possible further action. “It is also certain that a third round with a simple majority would damage Germany’s standing in the world” the former constitutional guardian explained. “We must be careful not to push Germany into a state crisis.” New elections would currently be avoided in order to prevent the newly classified “securely right-wing extremist” AfD from gaining power. “The established parties of the center are primarily responsible for this situation. They have ignored the needs and concerns of large parts of the population for years” Papier criticized.
