Germany’s Rising Knife Crime Spurs Call for Expulsion of Foreign Offenders

As knife crime continues to rise in Germany, the Union is pushing for a new law to expel foreign offenders. The CDU/CSU parliamentary faction’s internal affairs spokesperson, Alexander Throm, told the Bild newspaper that the police statistics show that the majority of perpetrators come from “non-German cultural circles” who are responsible for the violence. The new government is set to take a different course, Throm said, as agreed in the coalition contract, introducing a regular expulsion in the residence law for foreign violent offenders, effectively losing the right to stay in the country without exception for severe crimes against life and body. “The relevant groups must prepare for more consequences and harshness” Throm emphasized.

CDU parliamentarian Marc Henrichmann also spoke to the Bild, saying, “Let’s finally take the perpetrators into focus instead of the tools of crime. With weapon bans for extremists and offenders instead of more high-bureaucratic zoning restrictions. And with strong control powers against known offenders to the police.”

Nordrhein-Westfalen’s Interior Minister, Herbert Reul, expressed his concern about the growing problem of knives, saying, “Messer are becoming a societal problem. The escalation is pre-programmed if someone pulls out this potential weapon from their pocket. I am observing this knife mania with concern, especially among young people. This is something we cannot tolerate. We must make it clear to people that no one needs to walk the streets with a knife, neither for self-defense, protection, nor to impress.
