Fireworks Surge Sparks German Concerns

Sharp Increase in Fireworks Imports Sparks Debate Over German Policy and Security Concerns

Germany is experiencing a significant surge in imports of fireworks, raising questions about domestic policy, potential safety risks and the country’s reliance on Chinese production. Statistics released by Destatis reveal that imports of fireworks, rockets and related products soared to over 42,400 tons between January and September 2025 – a staggering 62.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This dramatic rise significantly outpaces previous years, exceeding even the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 (29,800 tons) by 42.4%. The comparatively low import figures during the COVID-19 pandemic, when sales were frequently restricted, have created a stark contrast and fueled the ongoing debate surrounding potential limitations on private fireworks displays. Concerns regarding safety hazards and environmental impact continue to be central to the discussion, with environmental groups voicing escalating fears about pollution and wildlife disruption.

The overwhelming majority of these imports originate from China. A staggering 98% of fireworks entering Germany between January and September 2025 were sourced from the Asian nation, maintaining a decades-long trend which sees China consistently account for over 90% of the German fireworks market. This near-total dependence raises concerns regarding supply chain vulnerabilities and potential geopolitical implications.

Conversely, German exports of fireworks have plummeted. Between January and September 2025, only 671 tons were exported, representing a 28.7% decrease from the previous year and a precipitous drop from the 1,980 tons exported in 2019. This illustrates a clear shift towards greater consumption within Germany itself, further exacerbating the challenges posed by the escalating import volumes.

Policymakers are now facing mounting pressure to address the situation. While the recent boom is partly attributed to pent-up demand following pandemic restrictions, the sheer scale of the increase is forcing a re-evaluation of existing regulations and the need for greater scrutiny of safety standards related to both production and consumer use. The continued near-exclusive reliance on Chinese imports also beckons a conversation about diversification of supply chains and the potential for boosting domestic, albeit limited, fireworks production.
