Fentanyl Dispute Deepens Trade Tensions

The US has imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, according to a White House representative who spoke with CNBC on Thursday. The president’s recent order increased the tariffs on Chinese imports from 84% to 125% and added a 20% tariff related to the Fentanyl dispute. The White House representative explained that the total tariff on China is now 145%.

On Wednesday, Trump suspended his previous decisions on tariffs. For countries that have not taken retaliatory measures against the US, the usual 10% rate will apply. Trump promised to forego any increase for 90 days.

The tariffs on Chinese imports were significantly increased and immediately raised to 125%. Trump wrote on Truth Social that China disregarded global markets, while other countries expressed their willingness to negotiate with the US. Beijing has responded to US tariffs with similar measures so far.

In response to the suspension of US tariffs, the European Union also stopped their retaliatory tariffs for 90 days. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized on X that Brussels wants to give negotiations a chance.
