Federal Prosecutor’s Office Takes Over Investigation of Bielefeld Stabbing Attack

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office (Bundesanwaltschaft) has taken over the investigation of the Bielefeld stabbing attack, a move deemed necessary due to the case’s significant importance, according to the General Federal Prosecutor (Generalbundesanwalt) on Tuesday.

The local police in Bielefeld will continue the criminal investigation, which has been ongoing since the early morning of May 18, when a Syrian national allegedly attacked patrons at a local establishment with knives, leaving four people with life-threatening injuries.

Prosecutors suspect the individual of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. The motives behind the attack are believed to be religiously motivated and the General Federal Prosecutor considers the incident an attack on the free democratic basic order, posing a threat to the internal security of the Federal Republic of Germany.
