The Verfassungsschutz has now classified the AfD as a “confirmed extremist right-wing endeavor”. This was announced by the Federal Agency on Friday. Previously, the party was classified as a “suspected extremist right-wing case”. The upgrading was based on the Verfassungsschutz’s assessment of the “extremist character of the entire party, which disregards human dignity”. During the examination, indications of right-wing extremist tendencies against the free democratic basic order from the AfD have become certain. “The prevailing ethnic-ancestry understanding of nationality within the party is not compatible with the free democratic basic order. It aims to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society, subject them to non-constitutional discrimination and thereby assign them a legally devalued status” it further stated. Concretely, the AfD, for example, does not consider German citizens with a migration history from Muslim-majority countries as equally belonging to the ethnic definition of the German people. “This exclusionary understanding of nationality is the starting point and ideological basis for continuous agitation against certain individuals or groups, which devalues and belittles them irrationally and fosters fear and rejection towards them” the Verfassungsschutz stated. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) described the assessment as “clear and unambiguous”. “Their racial stance is evident in racist statements, primarily against immigrants and Muslims” said the Minister. “This clearly contradicts the human dignity guarantee of Article 1 of the Basic Law.” The Minister made it clear: “The new classification is the result of a comprehensive and neutral examination, which is documented in a 1100-page report. It has not been influenced by any political influence on the new report.
