Federal Budget for 2025 to Be Adopted by End of September

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) is reportedly planning to have the federal budget for 2025 adopted by the end of September. According to the “Spiegel”, Klingbeil’s budget proposal is set to be decided by the Cabinet on June 25 and then discussed in the first reading by the Bundestag during the last session week before the summer break in early July. This plan would mean that the Budget Committee would have to meet almost continuously during the summer break, yet have less time for its consultations than usual. To meet the deadline, the reconciliation session of the Budget Committee would need to take place by mid-September.

Adding to the complexity, the draft budget for 2025 also needs to be accompanied by a draft budget for 2026 and discussed simultaneously. Additionally, a budget accompanying law is required, in which the plans of the new coalition, for which no funds have been allocated yet, are regulated.
