The FDP faction plans to introduce a work requirement for recipients of citizen’s allowance. “The charitable work obligation for recipients of citizen’s allowance who are employable will create a regulated daily routine, before they quickly return to the job market” said Christoph Meyer, deputy chairman of the FDP faction, to the Bild (Wednesday edition).
“For example, people who are capable of working can be called in to work against the neglect of Berlin. This includes cleaning and support work for playgrounds, parks, or train stations” Meyer said. “Whoever refuses suitable work and lives off the money of the working population must keep the public space clean and tidy for everyone else” he added.
According to Article 12 of the German Basic Law, no one in Germany can be forced to perform a specific job. The only exceptions are court-ordered detentions and a general, equally applicable, public service obligation.
