FDP General Secretary Marco Buschmann speaks out in favor of allowing nuclear power plants to operate again in principle, in order to secure the power supply for large IT data centers.
“If our country wants to play a role in cloud technologies and artificial intelligence, we need more power capacities” Buschmann told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. This also applies to the conversion of mobility and building heating to electricity.
“A new generation of smaller, modular nuclear reactors can help with that. If companies want to build and operate modern, safe, and much cheaper reactors privately, then that should be legally possible. Nobody can guarantee today whether the energy transition will succeed alone with renewables. A country like Germany should have a Plan B.”
The FDP’s election program demands the permission of nuclear power plants, but the party excludes the previously usual high state subsidies for it.
