Farmers See Stability Amid Weather Woes

Despite challenging weather conditions this year, including periods of intense heat and prolonged rainfall, Bavarian Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer has stated that he does not anticipate disruptions in food supply or substantial price increases. Speaking to “Bild am Sonntag” Rainer expressed confidence that farmers will ensure all products remain available. He acknowledged that while overall conditions have presented difficulties for agricultural producers, he does not foresee significant upward pressure on consumer prices.

The president of the farmers’ association has echoed this assessment, projecting an average harvest for the year. Rainer conceded that the timing of the rainfall has posed obstacles, particularly during the grain harvest. He emphasized that farmers are generally adept at adapting to unpredictable weather patterns.

However, Rainer dismissed the possibility of implementing price controls on food items, even in light of recent inflationary pressures. He noted that food prices have risen disproportionately to general inflation in recent years but cautioned against market intervention, deeming it an inappropriate measure.

Similarly, Rainer rejected calls for a reduction in value-added tax on specific food products, citing potential negative consequences for state revenues. He explained that the proceeds from value-added tax are shared between the federal government, regional states and local municipalities.
