Bundestagspräsidentin Julia Klöckner calls for caution in the debate about banning the AfD

Bundestagspräsidentin Julia Klöckner has urged caution in the ongoing debate about potentially banning the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), she expressed her general skepticism and emphasized the importance of good government work in order to reduce extremist positions.

Klöckner further explained, “The hurdles for a party ban are, for good reasons, very high in Germany. Therefore, this should not be approached lightly.” When commenting on the possibility of AfD politicians holding chairmanships in parliamentary committees, the president stated that the decision rests in the hands of the elected representatives.

“According to the Basic Law, no faction has the right to demand that one of their members be appointed chairman of a parliamentary committee in Germany” Klöckner explained. This highlights the importance of democratic processes and the role of elected officials in determining the composition of parliamentary committees. The Bundestagspräsidentin’s call for caution and focus on government work reflects a desire to maintain stability and adhere to the principles of the Basic Law while addressing concerns related to extremist positions within the AfD.
