Expectations Dashed in TV Duel

German Left Party Leader Jan van Aken expressed disappointment at the upcoming TV debate between Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and CDU’s Friedrich Merz, scheduled for Sunday evening. “Only the two of them would make a crime scene more exciting” van Aken told the Rheinische Post.

The Left Party politician added that democracy is “more colorful than the two, who barely differ from each other.” This, he said, is a “missed opportunity.” While it is good that politicians are asked on television how they plan to change the country, van Aken believes that the public already knows that Scholz and Merz are “shockingly in agreement” on issues such as rent control, as they do not intend to freeze or lower rents.

“And the billionaires remain untouchable with them, not being held accountable” van Aken stated.
