Ex-Wirecard CEO Plans Lifetime Work

Following his release from pre-trial detention, former Wirecard CEO Markus Braun has stated his intention to remain active professionally for the foreseeable future. In an interview conducted in writing with German magazine “Stern”, Braun expressed optimism regarding his post-detention life, stating he feels “much strength and energy” within himself.

Braun has been in custody for over five years, with the trial against him and several co-defendants extending nearly three years and encompassing more than 200 court hearing days. He acknowledged the profound experience of prolonged detention, noting the challenges of isolation and his adaptation to daily routines within that environment.

He confirmed a deliberate avoidance of contact with former colleagues, stating communication has been limited to interactions with his family and legal counsel, in strict adherence to imposed restrictions. Braun also reiterated his hope for a final acquittal.

The interview also included criticisms directed at the legal proceedings. Braun described the trial as a “farce” and suggested that his continued detention serves the purpose of undermining his legal defense. He argued that an objective review of the evidence would fail to justify the ongoing pre-trial custody and that no credible risk of flight exists. Braun cited his voluntary returns to Germany following his initial arrest and subsequent release on bail as evidence against grounds for flight risk, emphasizing that he has consistently complied with all reporting requirements.
