Berlin’s public prosecutor’s office has filed charges against former German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer, according to reports. The charges relate to allegations of perjury made before the parliamentary inquiry committee investigating the country’s road toll system.
Prosecutors allege that Scheuer made knowingly false statements during his testimony on October 2nd, 2020. The investigation into the matter has been ongoing since early May 2022. Scheuer has acknowledged the charges, confirming that he has been informed of the prosecutor’s decision to bring the case before the Berlin Regional Court.
He emphasized that the charges do not concern the failure of the proposed road toll for passenger cars, for which he has previously accepted political responsibility.
Scheuer has strongly criticized the actions of the prosecuting attorney, stating he finds the decision to file charges incomprehensible and deeply concerning. He questioned the timing and motives behind the indictment, suggesting it appeared “politically motivated” and deliberately timed to coincide with a traditionally slow news period in the summer months.
