Germany’s New Minister for Digitalization and Modernization Outlines Plan for Simplified and Efficient Administration

Germany’s newly appointed Minister for Digitalization and Modernization, Karsten Wildberger, has outlined his vision for a more efficient and streamlined administration, emphasizing the importance of digital solutions in daily life. Speaking at the Technology Experience Convention Heilbronn, Wildberger emphasized that digitalization will only accelerate if it works seamlessly in everyday life, citing examples such as reporting a change of address, opening a bank account, signing new contracts, or registering a vehicle online.

The former manager announced that in the future, every individual in Germany will need a digital identity to prove their identity and his ministry is working on a digital wallet, which could store a person’s ID, driver’s license, public transportation ticket, educational certificates and more. Wildberger stressed the importance of ensuring the security and protection of such digital data.

Wildberger also touched on the topic of artificial intelligence, stating that he will meet with European colleagues in early June to discuss the establishment of AI gigafactories in the EU and to set an agenda for the region. He emphasized the need for support for European companies building cloud infrastructure, criticizing the fact that 65 percent of public cloud infrastructure is controlled by three major non-European players. Wildberger called for a solution for Europe, highlighting that Germany is a significant customer in the market.
