A European Parliament Defense Committee Chair Warns of Potential Reopening of Russian Gas Supplies
The chair of the European Parliament’s Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann of the Free Democratic Party, has warned the Union of a possible quick resumption of gas deliveries from Russia immediately after the end of the war.
“I know from a reliable source that the CDU has already looked into the possibility of taking Russian gas again, in other words, undermining what is very important for the Federal Republic, namely becoming independent from Russia” she told the TV channel “Welt” on Tuesday.
“There are ‘large activities’ and connections to the Trump administration, so we will closely observe Mr. Merz, also from the extra-parliamentary opposition” Strack-Zimmermann said.
In recent days, CDU politicians Thomas Bareiß and Jan Heinisch have openly advocated for resuming gas trade with Russia after the end of the Russian attack war. Bareiß is negotiating for the CDU in the coalition negotiation team for the areas of infrastructure, building and housing, while Heinisch is involved in the climate and energy negotiations.
