The Chairman of the Defense Committee of the German Bundestag, Marcus Faber (FDP), expects significant increases in defense spending among NATO member states.

“What is certain is that it will be expensive for Europe” he told the ntv news portal on Thursday. “NATO will agree on a new target of at least three percent.”

For the FDP politician, many questions still remain open after the agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin negotiations on the future of Ukraine. “So far, some phone calls have been made and announcements have been made, but a ceasefire, let alone peace, is far away. Whether and when negotiations will take place is not yet certain. The situation is constantly being reevaluated every day.”

Faber does not believe that a lasting peace is possible if Russia is given too many concessions. “A peace that rewards the aggressor will be unstable” he said. The FDP politician also warned that more Ukrainians could flee their homeland. “An uncertain future for Ukraine poses the risk of further costly refugee movements.
