Europe urges tougher stance on Russia before Trump-Putin talks

European leaders have collectively urged continued pressure on Russia ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a joint statement released late Saturday, leaders from Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom, Finland and the European Union emphasized the necessity of a multifaceted approach. They assert that success hinges on a combination of active diplomacy, continued support for Ukraine and sustained pressure on the Russian Federation to cease its ongoing military actions. They affirmed their willingness to diplomatically support these efforts and to maintain the significant military and financial assistance currently being provided to Ukraine.

The European leaders also welcomed President Trump’s stated aims of bringing an end to the violence in Ukraine, concluding Russia’s aggression and achieving a just and lasting peace that secures Ukraine’s safety. They share the conviction that any diplomatic resolution must safeguard the vital security interests of both Ukraine and Europe.

Furthermore, the statement highlights a shared understanding that robust and credible security guarantees are essential, enabling Ukraine to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Leaders underscored Ukraine’s right to determine its own future, stressing that meaningful negotiations can only occur within the context of a ceasefire or de-escalation of hostilities. They collectively affirmed that a path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without the direct involvement of Ukraine itself.
