Omid Nouripour, a leading foreign policy spokesperson for the German Green Party, is advocating for the enforcement of a ceasefire in Ukraine, coupled with increased European Union sanctions against Russia.
In comments published Monday, Nouripour argued that a strengthening of EU sanctions is crucial, particularly in light of perceived close ties between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The more Trump fraternizes with Putin, the clearer Europe must be” he stated. He emphasized that negotiations for a just and lasting peace can only be equitable and sustainable after a ceasefire is established, urging the EU to prioritize this outcome.
Nouripour warned that the absence of a ceasefire would provide further opportunity for continued Russian aggression. He dismissed recent comments from Trump regarding the conflict as insincere, suggesting they were motivated by self-interest rather than a genuine concern for European security.
The remarks follow a speech given by Trump in Alaska, which Nouripour characterized as evidence that Europe cannot rely solely on the United States for its security. He stressed the need for Europe to proactively ensure its own defense capabilities and strategic autonomy.
