EU Closes in on 2030 Climate Goal as Member States Improve Emissions Reduction Plans

The European Union is on track to meet its 2030 climate goal, with member states having significantly narrowed the gap to achieve the energy and climate targets, the EU Commission announced on Wednesday.

According to the Commission, the EU’s member states have substantially improved their plans, bringing the bloc closer to a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, as pledged in the European Climate Law and achieving a minimum of 42.5% of renewable energy in the energy mix.

The Commission’s assessment shows that the EU is currently on the right path to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by around 54% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, provided that member states fully implement existing and planned national measures and EU policy.

EU Commissioner Teresa Ribera highlighted the significance of the updated national energy and climate plans, stating, “The updated national energy and climate plans show that the green agenda is not just a goal but a way to modernize our economies, drive industrial innovation and create more opportunities for Europeans.” She emphasized that the task now is to expand capacities and push forward with measures without delay, noting that the EU can achieve 55% and must create the conditions to reach 90% by 2040.
