A European Union official has called for the easing of sanctions against Syria, citing the need for economic stability and a peaceful transition process. Lamya Kaddor, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, urged EU foreign ministers to take a preliminary decision on Monday to ease sanctions, sending a signal for a new start in Syria.
Kaddor emphasized that economic stability is crucial for a “peaceful transition process”and for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. She added that the EU stands with the people of Syria and is willing to extend a hand to those seeking to rebuild and promote an inclusive, all-encompassing transition process.
The official also stressed that democratic minimum standards will continue to be demanded from the new authorities in Syria. “The security of ethnic and religious groups, of women and of neighboring countries must be guaranteed. Cooperation is only possible on this basis and it is the prerequisite for easing sanctions”Kaddor stated.
The politician expressed concern over reports of self-justice by groups affiliated with the HTS and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of minority groups.
However, Kaddor also made it clear that all sanctions against the former Assad regime must remain in place. “The Syrian society can only heal if the crimes of the regime are addressed and those responsible are held accountable”she said. “We will continue to push for evidence collection, the clarification of the fates of the missing and the transfer of Syrian war criminals to international or national courts.
