European Union Leaders Stand in Solidarity with Israeli Government Following Airstrikes on Iran
Top European Union officials have publicly expressed their support for the Israeli government, following the recent airstrikes on Iran.
Manfred Weber, the European People’s Party (EVP) leader, emphasized the importance of Israel’s role in the region, stating that the country is currently engaged in a crucial battle against Islamist terrorism, led by Iran. He cited the example of Lebanon, which now has a chance to develop a peaceful and democratic government, thanks to Israel’s efforts in pushing back the Hezbollah militia. Weber urged the EU to stand alongside Israel in this fight.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, echoed similar sentiments, saying that Israel’s military action against Iran’s nuclear program is understandable. She predicted a future in which the EU will be grateful to Israel for preventing the development of an Iranian atomic bomb, which would ultimately bring more security to Europe. However, Strack-Zimmermann also stressed the importance of international diplomacy in de-escalating the situation and preventing further escalation.
These statements from high-ranking EU officials demonstrate a clear shift in the EU’s stance on the Israeli-Iranian conflict, with many now viewing Israel as a key player in the region’s security and stability.
