In a joint statement, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed their “unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia” on the country’s Independence Day. The leaders emphasized their backing for Georgia’s democratic and European aspirations, describing them as a reflection of the people’s desire to be part of the European family.
However, the trio also condemned the Georgian authorities’ actions that undermine democracy, as well as attacks on civil society, the media and government critics. They stressed the importance of upholding the right to free speech and assembly and called for an investigation into reports of excessive violence. The leaders also urged the Georgian government to revise laws that do not meet European standards and to restart the reform process.
Moreover, the statement called for the resumption of a dialogue between the government, opposition and civil society in Georgia, arguing that the people should not be deprived of the opportunities that come with the country’s European path.
