The European Commission has approved the planned acquisition of Infinera by Nokia without any conditions. Following an examination of the proposed transaction, the Commission concluded that the takeover would not raise competition concerns in the European Economic Area, it was announced in Brussels on Wednesday.
Nokia and Infinera offer optical transmission systems for data transmission over fiber optic cables. According to the involved companies, the acquisition will enable the new entity to accelerate product development and compete more strongly with major market rivals.
The combined market share of Nokia and Infinera in the global market for optical data transmission systems is “limited”, the EU Commission stated and there are “several serious competitors” that will continue to exert sufficient competitive pressure on Nokia after the takeover.
