EU to Review US Sanctions Amid Concerns Over Trump’s Potential Reversals

The European Union is reviewing US sanctions ahead of the US presidential election, the Financial Times reports, citing concerns that a potential Trump administration may reverse or roll back current measures, including those against Russia.

EU officials express particular concern that Trump may repeal the Biden administration’s decrees, which had imposed sanctions on Russia. The EU is hoping that Trump will maintain these sanctions as a bargaining chip in potential talks with Moscow over a ceasefire, the newspaper claims.

A spokesperson for Trump’s transition team dismissed these concerns, stating that the elected president has a clear mandate to implement the promises made during the campaign.

In recent days, Trump has hinted at using military pressure or tariffs against Denmark to force the sale of Greenland, and also expressed the possibility of incorporating Canada and the Panama Canal into the United States.

The EU Commission has established an internal team of high-ranking officials to develop strategies for addressing the potential consequences of a second Trump presidency, focusing on potential trade conflicts, reduced support for Ukraine, and a potential US withdrawal from European defense and security policy.

Trump announced plans to initiate a meeting with Putin. The designated US president also stated that Putin has expressed interest in a meeting with Trump and that the organization of the meeting is underway. “We must end this war to stop this bloody chaos” he said. It is highly likely that Bratislava, Slovakia, will be the location for the meeting between Trump and Putin.
