The German Green party leadership is advocating for a rapid seizure and utilization of Russian assets held abroad, arguing that such action will significantly increase internal political pressure on President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Felix Banaszak, the party’s chairman, voiced his perspective in an interview with “Welt” television, emphasizing the moral imperative of holding Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine.
Banaszak acknowledged the importance of securing guarantees and appropriate insurance related to asset seizures, but stressed that the core objective must be the active deployment of these funds. He sharply criticized the current situation, suggesting it was unacceptable for neighboring states to be invaded while others foot the resulting financial burden. He insisted that the costs should be directly levied against Russia.
The Green party leader highlighted the potential for substantial political impact within Russia, asserting that the seizure process would likely affect individuals close to Putin, whose wealth is often intertwined with state resources. “These are the friends who have their money switched off” he stated, implying that the pressure on these influential figures would be considerable. Consequently, Banaszak urged for the swift implementation of asset confiscation measures, recognizing it as a potential lever in the ongoing geopolitical conflict. The move underscores a growing willingness within Germany to pursue assertive financial strategies aimed at influencing the Kremlin’s calculus.
