The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has strongly advocated for the recently proposed sanctions package targeting Israel and leading members of Hamas. In an interview with the Leading European Newspaper Alliance (LENA), she expressed concern over what she described as actions by the Israeli government that undermine the viability of a two-state solution.
Specifically, she cited plans for a settlement project in the E-1 area, noting its potential to effectively sever the occupied West Bank from East Jerusalem. According to von der Leyen, this has prompted the Commission to propose a package of targeted and proportionate measures aimed at creating a pathway towards a resolution.
The President also reiterated demands for the immediate release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, emphasizing the need for unrestricted access for all humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. A cessation of hostilities, an immediate ceasefire, was similarly highlighted as a crucial step forward.
Looking towards the future, von der Leyen affirmed the European Commission’s commitment to a two-state solution, which she believes is the sole prospect for lasting peace in the region. She underscored the importance of a secure Israel, a viable Palestinian Authority, the elimination of extremism and the eradication of Hamas.
