European Lawmakers Urge Tougher Action Against Radicalizing Algorithms

A German parliamentarian and expert in interior affairs, Sebastian Fiedler, has called for a more robust European legal approach to combat algorithms that amplify radical ideologies online.

In an interview with Phoenix, Fiedler highlighted the alarming rise of politically motivated crimes and the role of algorithms in spreading radical content. “If we were discussing this in the real world, the situation would be different, but in the digital world, on these platforms, there are algorithms that precisely amplify this kind of thought” he said. “Money is made through this, by the likes of Elon Musk and others and therefore, we urgently need to ban these algorithms, not the content, not the opinion, but the algorithms themselves.”

Fiedler warned that these algorithms could ultimately lead to the production of terrorists and that inaction would be a significant threat to the democratic rule of law. The recent arrest of five young men suspected of being part of a right-wing extremist terrorist cell serves as a stark reminder of the magnitude of the threat, according to Fiedler. While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, he also praised the security authorities for their vigilance and good work in combating the right-wing extremist threat.
