EU Commission in Crisis as Nord-Stream Probe Demands Go Unanswered

European Parliament Member Fabio De Masi, a member of the Left, has been raising concerns over the Nord Stream complex and the Ukrainian individual, Wolodymyr S., suspected of being involved in the pipeline’s destruction. According to an article in the Berliner Zeitung, De Masi sent a written inquiry to the European Commission, asking whether Wolodymyr S. had not been registered in the Schengen database by German authorities, as required for preventing border crossings. The article quotes De Masi’s questions, stating that the EU Commission’s response was unsatisfactory.

The article reports that Wolodymyr S., a Ukrainian national, allegedly fled from Poland to Ukraine before being arrested, as stated by German authorities last year. The EU Commissioner for the Interior and Migration, Magnus Brunner, replied to De Masi, stating that the Commission has no access to the Schengen Information System and cannot verify whether a person is listed or not. The Commission also cannot input, correct, or delete data in the system, even if it is already contained.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas responded, saying the Commission does not interfere in ongoing investigations and does not influence their outcome. The investigation into the Nord Stream I and II pipeline explosions in September 2022 is still ongoing in Germany, according to Kallas.

De Masi described the Commission’s answers as “telling” and criticized the EU’s lack of action in enforcing the European treaties and a European arrest warrant against the suspected perpetrators of the Nord Stream sabotage. He also expressed concerns over the EU’s dependence on the US and the negative impact of economic sanctions on the European economy.

In a recent social media post, De Masi further criticized the current government’s economic and defense policies, stating that the country is heading for a decline and that the establishment in politics and media has lost the ability for self-correction. He also accused the government of prioritizing military spending and neglecting public investments and the social state.
