In a call for greater gender equality, the President of the German Bundestag, Julia Klöckner, has urged measures to promote more women in politics, parliaments and leadership positions. According to Klöckner, gender equality should be a necessity, not an exception and all must work towards achieving this goal.
The Bundestag, Germany’s federal parliament, falls short of this goal, with only 32 percent of its members being women. The CDU/CSU faction, of which Klöckner is a part, fares even worse, with only 23 percent of its members being women. The selection of a seven-man delegation to the coalition committee, with no women represented, has sparked intense criticism.
Newly appointed Research Minister, Dorothee Bär, has shared her perspective on the challenges faced by women in politics, stating that a career in politics requires a long-term commitment, likening it to a marathon rather than a sprint.
