German energy infrastructure faces increasing scrutiny, prompting calls for heightened security measures. Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of energy distributor Eon, warned of reconnaissance activities targeting critical infrastructure, emphasizing the need for vigilance within the current geopolitical climate.
Birnbaum’s statements to Focus magazine underscored a growing concern regarding potential cyberattacks and drone-based threats. He cautioned against complacency, pointing to already observable attacks within the digital realm. The priority, he stated, is to make access to systems as difficult as possible while simultaneously preparing for the possibility that attackers may succeed.
Beyond security, Birnbaum addressed challenges within Germany’s energy transition. He stressed the crucial need to synchronize the expansion of renewable energy sources with the corresponding development of the power grid, ensuring a match with actual demand. He warned against the potential for curtailed power generation and increased costs due to imbalances.
He further expressed reservations about a renewed cycle of subsidies, noting a concern that battery storage systems could become the target of a new wave of financial support following decades of subsidies for wind and solar power. The sector, according to Birnbaum, needs to prioritize efficiency and sustainability rather than relying on ongoing financial interventions.
