Elon Musk and his team from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aim to cut state expenditures by a billion US dollars. In an interview with Fox News, the entrepreneur argued that such a measure is necessary for the US to remain financially stable and avoid bankruptcy, as a solvent government would be able to fund critical services for its citizens.
According to Musk, there is a significant amount of waste and fraud in the US government. He believes that a 15% reduction in expenditures would be possible without affecting critical government services.
Musk describes the work of DOGE as a revolution and also predicts that DOGE will be the greatest revolution in government since the American Revolution. In the end, the US would be in a much better state and the future would be fantastic, Musk said. If DOGE’s efforts fail, however, the US would collapse, he warned: “If this effort fails, the ship of America will sink. That’s why we’re doing it.”
Musk plans to complete the majority of the required work in the coming weeks, as his term in the position is set to end in 64 days. As a non-full-time employee, he is only allowed to work for the US government for a maximum of 130 days per year.
The interview with Fox News was the first in which Musk and high-ranking DOGE officials explained their work to the media. Musk was accompanied by seven DOGE leadership members, including Steve Davis, the president of Musk’s tunnel construction company Boring Company and Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb.
