Electric Car Sales Surge in Germany

Germany has witnessed record-breaking electric vehicle (EV) registrations in the first half of 2025, according to data released by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), the Federal Motor Vehicle Authority. New registrations of electric passenger cars reached an unprecedented high, surpassing nearly 250,000 units. This figure not only significantly exceeds the 184,125 registrations recorded in the previous year but also surpasses the peak figures achieved in 2023.

Electric vehicles, encompassing both plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, now represent 17.7 percent of all new passenger car registrations. Overall, new passenger car registrations decreased by 4.7 percent compared to the first half of the previous year, yet the results remain the second-highest recorded since 2020. The total number of electric vehicle registrations across all types reached 387,674, commanding a 27.6 percent share of new registrations.

Regional variations in registrations are notable. Bavaria led the way with the highest number of new electric vehicle registrations at 50,714, closely followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (50,558) and Baden-Württemberg (38,699). Similar trends were observed in hybrid vehicle registrations, with Bavaria again leading (117,931), followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (108,043) and Baden-Württemberg (82,407).

Notably, the average CO2 emissions from new vehicles registered during this period decreased by 11.1 percent, reaching 109.6 g/km, signalling a broader shift towards more environmentally friendly vehicle choices.
