East Germany Feels Shut Out of Defense Contracts

The eastern German state of Saxony is signaling a potential conflict with the federal government regarding the allocation of substantial investments earmarked for defense-related industries. State Premier Michael Kretschmer, of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), voiced concerns that current stimulus packages for the arms industry are overwhelmingly benefiting companies located in western Germany.

Kretschmer expressed that this discrepancy is causing significant frustration within the eastern German economy and urged Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to prioritize awarding a substantial portion of forthcoming contracts to businesses in eastern states. He emphasized the need for a more equitable distribution of these vital investments.

Separately, Premier Kretschmer cautioned against relocating the ILA (International Aerospace Exhibition), Europe’s largest aviation trade show, from the Berlin metropolitan region. He revealed that discussions within the federal government suggest Minister Pistorius is considering moving the event back to Hannover. Kretschmer warned that such a relocation would represent a considerable setback for the eastern region.
