German Weather Service Warns of Severe Thunderstorms in Eastern and Southern Germany

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in eastern and southern parts of the country, affecting particularly the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Bavaria. According to the DWD, issued on Sunday in Offenbach, the storms could lead to flooding of basements and streets, as well as damage to buildings, cars and agricultural crops due to hail.

The current warnings are in effect from 3 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, with the possibility of an extension or expansion to other areas. The DWD stated that the moist and warm air has spread to the eastern regions, increasing the risk of thunderstorms. A cold front, on the other hand, is expected to bring cooler and drier air to the northwest and west of the country.

Already, more intense thunderstorms have formed in eastern Bavaria and the Thuringian Forest, as well as the Ore Mountains. The main threat is heavy rain, but locally, larger hail and strong winds are also possible, the weather service reported. The storms are expected to move eastward.
