VfL Wolfsburg Appoints Paul Simonis as New Head Coach

The German Bundesliga club, VfL Wolfsburg, has announced the appointment of Paul Simonis as its new head coach, effective from the upcoming season. The Dutch coach, who previously led Go Ahead Eagles Deventer to a cup victory and a seventh-place finish in the league, has signed a contract with the Wolves until June 30, 2027.

Simonis will be joined by a team of coaches, including long-serving goalkeeper coach Pascal Formann, Tristan Berghuis, Peter van der Veen and Martin Darneviel. The new head coach’s official introduction is scheduled to take place in early July.

“We believe he is an excellent fit for our profile” said VfL Wolfsburg’s sports director, Peter Christiansen. “Paul is a very detailed worker and he shares our in-game and structural ideas. We want to use his fresh impulses to reorganize the VfL Wolfsburg, from the first team to the youth academy and to consistently take his development forward.”

Simonis had only taken over as head coach of Go Ahead Eagles last summer, leading the team to a cup victory on April 21, their first title in 92 years, in a penalty shootout against AZ Alkmaar. Prior to that, he worked as a coach at Go Ahead Eagles and SC Heerenveen and spent 15 years in the youth sector at Sparta Rotterdam, taking charge of the U17 and U19 teams in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
