Dutch and German Leaders Unite Against Frictions?

Berlin, Germany – The Dutch Prime Minister, Dick Schoof, held a meeting with German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, in Berlin on Tuesday, focusing on European trade and asylum policies.

During a joint press conference, Schoof stated that the two governments are working together to avoid trade tariffs. Merz added that they discussed the Mercosur agreement between the EU and five South American countries, with the goal of quickly ratifying the deal. The Chancellor emphasized that the agreement should be ratified only by the European institutions, as “EU only” agreements, which means it would not require ratification by individual member states.

When asked about the rejection of asylum seekers at Germany’s borders, Schoof said the Netherlands are not currently invoking Article 72 of the AEUV, but are observing the developments in Germany. The Prime Minister instead emphasized the importance of strengthening the EU’s external borders and partnerships with non-EU countries. Merz expressed the need for a strict limitation of irregular migration and the swift implementation of the new EU asylum regulations.

The two leaders also expressed their shock and condolences over the recent shooting in Austria, offering their sympathies to the families of the victims. “We share the pain and grief of the families” said Merz, “and wish the injured a speedy recovery. We hope that the families of the victims find comfort in the circle of their loved ones and friends.
