Drone Surge Tests German Security Council

A significant and concerning increase in drone sightings across Germany, particularly over airports, ports, arms manufacturers and military installations, is emerging as a critical early challenge for the newly established National Security Council within the Chancellery.

The council, designed to coordinate the efforts of various security agencies and currently in the process of being formed, is reportedly being activated ahead of schedule to address the escalating situation, according to information obtained by “Bild am Sonntag”.

Intelligence services and law enforcement agencies are currently unable to definitively attribute the drone activity, with sources indicating that a Russian origin cannot be either confirmed or ruled out. Furthermore, uncertainty exists regarding the exact nature of the objects observed, with authorities still investigating whether they are indeed drones or smaller aircraft.

The German government is working to establish a comprehensive understanding of the incidents. The Federal Intelligence Service is gathering information from neighboring countries, while the Federal Interior Ministry is coordinating efforts with the Federal Police and the individual states. The German Armed Forces are also contributing intelligence data. Government officials cited by “Bild am Sonntag” stated that the sheer volume of reports underscores the urgency and necessity of the National Security Council, scheduled to commence full operation in the coming weeks to manage these evolving security threats.
