Authorities in Lower Saxony, Germany, have launched investigations into multiple individuals suspected of operating drones over the Bundeswehr’s marine arsenal in Wilhelmshaven. The incident, reported by “Der Spiegel”, raises concerns about security vulnerabilities at sensitive military sites.
Police confirmed that pilots were identified in five separate incidents occurring in May and June. Investigations have been initiated to address violations of aviation regulations and to assess the potential for surveillance of areas deemed crucial to national security.
While speculation has arisen regarding possible involvement by external actors, specifically Russia, police have stated that no conclusive evidence currently supports such a link. Preliminary findings suggest the individuals involved are largely civilian drone operators without discernible professional backgrounds. Evidence of a direct connection to intelligence agencies or military entities remains absent.
The incidents are part of a growing trend, with drones increasingly observed flying over military facilities, industrial areas and other critical infrastructure across Germany. Identifying the operators of these devices has proven difficult, highlighting challenges in safeguarding sensitive locations. The investigations are ongoing.
