Drone Defense Sparks Political Clash

Concerns are escalating regarding the German government’s response to the increasing threat posed by unauthorized drone activity. Konstantin von Notz, Green Party expert on domestic affairs, has publicly criticized Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) for what he characterizes as a delayed reaction to the evolving situation. Von Notz stated that the hybrid threat emanating from Russia has been persistent for some time, suggesting a lack of prioritization from the Interior Minister.

While acknowledging recent steps to improve coordination between the federal government and state authorities, Von Notz emphasized the absence of a comprehensive and current assessment of the drone incidents, which have become increasingly frequent. He questioned the proposed deployment of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) in support roles, highlighting that maintaining public safety and addressing potential espionage threats should primarily fall under the purview of law enforcement agencies. He urged Minister Dobrindt to actively facilitate a collaborative approach and develop solutions that are consistent with Germany’s constitutional framework.

Clara Bünger, domestic policy spokesperson for the Left Party, echoed these concerns, warning against the potential for a gradual militarization of domestic security. Bünger argued that isolated incidents risk being exploited to justify expanded military involvement within Germany, a move she believes conflicts with constitutional principles. She underscored that deployment of the Bundeswehr within the country should be reserved for truly exceptional circumstances, cautioning against a precedent that could broaden their operational scope.
